Burberry Takes the Gloominess out of Rainy Days...

It seems like it has rained every day here for a long time, which is a bummer. But hey, at least my little garden is getting plenty of water! And the only other good thing about all the rain is wearing my Burberry wellies. They are so adorable and keep my feet nice and dry!

In college, my girlfriends chipped in for my birthday one year to buy me a Burberry umbrella, which totally made walking around on rainy days so much more enjoyable... until last fall when strong winds broke my beloved umbrella. I have yet to replace it because it is unfortunately not very high on the priority list of things to spend money on when we have all kinds of renovation projects to do on the house. However, this umbrella remains at the top of my non-essential Monogrammed Wish List:

I also love this "purse raincoat" from Rain Couture. It is so popular that they are out of stock and I think it is an ingenious idea; there have been plenty of times when I have been caught off-guard by a rain storm and look like a fool trying to use my body as a shield to keep my Speedy from getting wet. If I had one of these to keep in my purse, all of that could be avoided!

What rainy day gear makes your rainy days less gloomy?

Monogrammed Wedding: Stationery Part II

The amazingly talented Laura Hooper did all of the calligraphy for my wedding and I could not have been happier!

The invitation, reception, and response cards all went inside the inner envelope:

I asked Laura to write in her Parisian script to address the inner and outer envelopes:

Seriously, how beautiful is her calligraphy?!

I also asked Laura to do calligraphy for the escort cards and table names for the reception in her Copperplate script:

Instead of table numbers, we had people sit at tables named after all of the courses Rob and I took together during law school (you can see the Criminal Procedure sign Laura made in the bottom left of this photo):

And finally, I asked Laura to design one of her lovely maps for our wedding since the Church and reception were in different locations:

Oh how I love stationery...

Monogrammed Wedding: Stationery

I love stationery. I had fallen in love with letterpress well before I was even engaged and though it was expensive, I had to have a letterpress stationery suite and I refused to compromise. I found my perfect letterpress stationery at Bella Figura. Seriously, once I ordered a sample, I could not even think of ordering invitations anywhere else after I felt the quality of Bella Figura's paper. I liked two designs in particular:

and ended up fusing them into my own custom style, which was mainly the Classic Calligraphy style done in Copperplate/Flourished Copperplate by Debi Zeinert by hand. I asked Bella Figura to add a few lines of text in caps (like the second invitation above) to set off the calligraphy. My favorite parts of the invitation suite are the custom monograms that Debi Zeinert created for Rob and me (one with just our first initials to use before the wedding and one with our joint married monogram). We also upgraded the inner envelope to be lined in beautiful gold paper.

Photo by me (and it literally pained me to white out some of our information)

In addition to the invitation set, we ordered matching letterpress covers for our ceremony programs:

Stay tuned for part II of my wedding stationery that involves the beautiful work of Laura Hooper!

Strawberries Galore

Rob and I went strawberry picking over the weekend at a local pick-your-own farm and ended up picking 15 pounds of strawberries! These were literally the reddest, juiciest, and most delicious strawberries I have ever had.

That night, I made some strawberry shortcakes from a recipe out of my favorite cookbook: The New Best Recipe from Cook's Illustrated (see my sidebar for more info about the book). I had received this book as a present at my bridal shower last summer from my mom's friend, who told me that she had learned more about cooking from this book than all her years of cooking before she had it. Before Rob and I were married, I knew pretty much nothing about cooking (I've always been a baker), but now I have developed a passion for learning how to cook and The New Best Recipe cookbook has become my go-to guide whenever I want to learn how to make something. I love cookbooks and I have collected a lot of them over the past year, but this is the most amazing cookbook ever because the authors explain how they have tested the recipes with various modifications and tell you the reason they decided on the best methodology for each recipe. There are also 'how-to' guides for various cooking techniques, taste tests for the best products you can use for your recipes, and kitchen equipment reviews. Basically, I would be completely lost without this cookbook now!

Here are the recipes I used from The New Best Recipe for the Strawberry Shortcakes and Whipped Cream:

Now I need to freeze all the other strawberries and find some more delicious recipes to make... strawberry jam perhaps?

Happy Flag Day!

it's the little things...

Peonies just bloomed in our new backyard (obviously, I didn't plant them and can't take the credit for them!) and last night Rob picked some for me to have inside. Sometimes, it's the little things that make me the happiest!

The beautiful flowers in my backyard have inspired me to start gardening and I need all the help I can get because I am a total newbie in this area... does anyone have great gardening advice or resources for beginners?

the little white dress

There is precious little I love more in the Summer than white sundresses. Here are a few I have my eye on:

What are your favorite sundresses for the summer?

delicious Greek recipe!

With all of that delicious fresh produce, I wanted to find a recipe to use some of it last night. I have been craving Greek food for a while, so I found a recipe for tzatziki sauce on a great food blog and marinated some chicken to go with it.

{photo credit}

Here is Kalyn's Kitchen's recipe:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tzatziki (Greek Yogurt and Cucumber Sauce)

(Makes about 3 1/2 cups. You can cut the recipe in half, but it's so good, you really shouldn't. Recipe courtesy of Georgette.)

3 cups Greek Yogurt (or regular plain yogurt, strained as described above)
juice of one lemon (about 3 T)
1 garlic clove, chopped
2 medium cucumbers, seeded and diced
about 1 T kosher salt for salting cucumbers
1 T finely chopped fresh dill (can substitute mint leaves for a slightly different version)
Kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste

If you don't have Greek yogurt, strain plain yogurt as described above. Peel cucumbers, then cut in half lengthwise and take a small spoon and scrape out seeds. Discard seeds. (If you use the small seedless or European cucumbers with few seeds, you can skip this step.) Dice cucumbers, then put in a colander, sprinkle on 1 T salt, and let stand for 30 minutes to draw out water. Drain well and wipe dry with paper towel.

In food processor with steel blade, add cucumbers, garlic, lemon juice, dill, and a few grinds of black pepper. Process until well blended, then stir this mixture into the yogurt. Taste before adding any extra salt, then salt if needed. Place in refrigerator for at least two hours before serving so flavors can blend. (This resting time is very important.)

This will keep for a few days or more in the refrigerator, but you will need to drain off any water and stir each time you use it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was a delicious recipe and we put the chicken on Greek flat bread with feta. Yum! I've also been dipping the leftover flat bread in the tzatziki sauce as a snack this afternoon :)

P.S. A big thank you to The Baffled Blogger who gave me the One Lovely Blog award! Go on over and check out her blog if you haven't; she is trying to reach 50 followers!!

my real life supermarket sweep!

It has been so frustrating not having the internet for the past few days and not being able to keep up with y'all! I was so happy when I saw the cable guy pull into the driveway today... it is probably sad how addicted to the internet I am.

This is one of the last pictures I took at our old apartment; can you tell Lilly wanted to make sure we were packing her too?

A couple of days ago, I went shopping at our local grocery that happened to be closing in order to move about 100 yards away to a bigger, brand new store. While I was there, the coolest thing happened... the produce manager said stuff as many fruits and veggies as you can in a plastic bag and that he would put a one dollar sticker on it! Seriously, I felt like I was on that Supermarket Sweep game show that I loved when I was little (how many things can you fit in your shopping cart as quickly as possible)! It was a little insane, but I scored a ton of fresh produce for our dinners this week! I had to take a picture to show y'all:

I got all of this for TWO DOLLARS. I think it may be the best deal I have ever gotten in my life!

P.S. That is the color of my newly painted kitchen--quite cheery, don't you think?

all moved in

After nearly a month of packing, painting, and otherwise updating the new house, we are finally all moved in! There is still a lot of work to do; if it weren't for my blackberry I would have zero access to the internet and I can't find anything I need, of course. But it is extremely exciting to be in a new house that we own and can do whatever we want with. Stay tuned for plenty of pictures to come!

comfy casual goddess style

One of my favorite summer dresses is the Maxi dress by Gypsy05. It is made of organic jersey cotton, so it is incredibly comfortable and comes in a ton of colors! I wore this green one to my rehearsal dinner last summer and I loved it so much I bought the white too.

I found out about Gypsy05 when I was reading People magazine and fell in love with the maxi dress that Lauren Conrad was wearing and I was pleasantly surprised that Gypsy's dresses are fairly reasonably priced. Even better, I just received an email from Gypsy05 that everything in the store is 20% off through 5/27 with the promo code MEMORIAL09! I know I'll be living in mine this summer!

P.S. I spy some adorable MacBeth buckets behind L.C. on the patio!

Golden Retriever-Proof Toys

I used to buy Lilly plush toys because they are so cute, but then I realized she could rip the stuffing out of them in 5 minutes flat. She also has rope toys that she hasn't been able to destroy, but they're not quite as cute as those darn plush ones. Recently, I came across dog toys that are the perfect solution: rope toys that are made into adorable animals! Check out this cute lobster:

Even better, Jax and Bones donates a portion of their proceeds to animal rescue!

my bags are packed!

We're going up to the house at the Lake for the weekend and I am so excited because it's the first time we're going this year!

{photo credit}

The place at the Lake is my inlaws' summer home in the Adirondacks and it is absolutely the most serene place I've ever been... serene that is, when 3 not-quite-yet-1-year-old golden retrievers aren't being crazy! It has been so long since we were last there that we had only had Lilly for a week, she was so tiny:

She loves the water:

Hope y'all have a great weekend!

who else misses Tim Gunn?

The Fashion Show is clearly a rip-off of Project Runway, but I think I'll probably keep watching it because it has potential to be good. Isaac Mizrahi is definitely no Tim Gunn and Kelly Rowland is no Heidi Klum, but so long as Project Runway remains tied up in litigation, The Fashion Show will have to do.

The only piece I really liked tonight was the jacket on this first model:

By the way, thank you so much for all of the supportive and helpful comments on my last post. It means the world to me to have such a great support system out there!

tags and awards

I have received a tag and a couple of awards recently and I would like to thank these lovely ladies:

Lauren Nicole and BRD who gave me the Attitude of Gratitude Award:

Speaking of gratitude, I am very grateful to several generous bloggers who have sent me lovely goodies recently and I will do proper thank you posts when I find my digital camera.

Also, BLC tagged a bunch of legal ladies for the Fancy Pants Award (legalese ed.):

Why do you love blogging? I love blogging because of the friendships I have made with fellow bloggers, who have been there for me in bad times, celebrated with me in good times, and continuously give me great advice... y'all are the best!

Finally, Smile Steady tagged me to list six unimportant things that make me happy:

Pink peonies
Aqua Ball jars
Peep toe pumps
The warm sun
Crisp white linens
The smell of coffee brewing in the morning

Thanks ladies, you are all so sweet!

to color or not to color

Rob and I are moving into a new house in a month and the house has a lot of sentimental value because it has been in my family since the 1960s, but it also hasn't been updated much since the 1960s! However, we're really excited to do a lot of DIY projects and make the home into exactly what we want. The first thing we are doing is having the hardwood floors refinished because neither husband nor I am crazy about carpeting. We have a meeting today and I can't wait to see those beautiful hardwoods gleaming!

After the floors are done, our next project is painting. I've been giving a lot of thought to what colors I want to paint different rooms, but I am having such a hard time deciding! We chose the Valencia sleigh bed and matching dressers from Pottery Barn last fall and I really love two different bedroom looks: white walls with all white linens or blue walls with some blue bedding. Here are photos of the two color schemes, which do you like better?

the most beautiful sewing box ever...

I stumbled upon this beautiful sewing box from Smythson of Bond Street. I can't imagine anything more beautiful to keep my sewing supplies in!

This is one of my favorite colors and Smythson has a line of items in it this spring!
